On the 20th September 2024 Lucy & Josh will be taking part in a 5 day Trek to Machu Picchu with Charity Challenge to raise money for Anthony Nolan.
This will be in memory of Lucy's Dad Terry Abbott who sadly passed away, aged 60, in April 2023 after he underwent a Stem Cell transplant 7months earlier in September 2022. After living with myelofibrosis for 12 years the only cure for Terry was to have a Stem Cell transplant. Anthony Nolan found Terry an almost perfect match for the transplant to go ahead, giving him the chance of a complete cure. Unfortunately, after the transplant successfully taking, complications later down the line led to Terry suffering with GvHD on his Liver (Graft Vs Host Disease) which tragically, within weeks of diagnosis, took his life.
Although the outcome of the transplant was not what we had hoped for, Terry loved to help others and would have wanted to raise awareness to help as many other people with blood cancer.
All money raised will go directly to the charity as the trek is 100% self funded, the money will aid in supporting families who have been through or are currently going through similar situations with a loved one. It will help raise awareness and fund new potential donor's on the stem cell register as well as funding their ongoing research for ground-breaking treatments for GvHD.
The 5 day trek will start in the ancient Inca Capital of Cusco where we will take the Ancascocha trail to hike and camp through the Andes mountains. Reaching heights of 4,500m above sea level during the hike we will eventually reach Machu Picchu.
Any donations, no matter how big or small, would be greatly appreciated! For those who would like to go a step further and become a donor by joining the stem cell register, you can do so by following this link: https://www.anthonynolan.org/help-save-a-life/join-stem-cell-register.
Thank you!
